Senator Josh Hawley
115 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator Hawley,
Choose Life Coalition urgently brings to your attention the findings of a deeply troubling new study published by the Ethics and Public Policy Center. This is the largest-ever analysis of chemical abortion outcomes, revealing a shocking rate of dangerous adverse events linked to abortion pills.
The study reviewed over 865,000 cases between 2017 and 2023 and found that nearly 11% of women suffered significant complications including sepsis, hemorrhage, infection, and in some tragic cases, death. The actual rate of adverse events is 22 times higher than the 0.5% complication rate the FDA continues to claim.
These findings are alarming for several reasons:
- The safety of chemical abortion drugs has been grossly overstated, leaving women vulnerable to life-threatening complications.
- Mail-order distribution without in-person medical oversight has put women and minors at extreme risk.
- The FDA has permitted major policy changes based on incomplete and outdated data, raising serious concerns: if risks this severe have been hidden, what else is being concealed?
Chemical abortions account for more than 50% of all abortions in the U.S. Advertised as safe as over-the-counter medications like Tylenol, these drugs generate enormous profits for both the abortion industry and pharmaceutical companies. Despite mounting evidence of dangerous outcomes, the industry continues to spend millions of dollars to ensure widespread use, prioritizing profit over the well-being of women.
This is a public health crisis that demands immediate action. Women have been misled, exposed to life-threatening risks, and in too many cases, have paid with their lives.
Choose Life Coalition respectfully urges you to call for congressional hearings to fully investigate the FDA’s approval and oversight of chemical abortion drugs, its reckless mail-order distribution policies, and the agency’s failure to require full and transparent reporting of adverse events. We must also examine the role that profit-driven motives play in perpetuating these dangerous practices.
Your leadership in defending life and standing for truth has been vital, and we trust you will bring the same commitment to this urgent matter. Thank you for your attention and action.
Sincerely,
Scott Baker
